This week the fashion world lost one of their own, L’Wren Scott, a designer and model. However, the media choose to giver her the sole identity of Mick Jagger’s girlfriend. A number of outlets minimized Ms. Scott’s contributions to the world with this leading headline.
“Mick Jagger’s designer girlfriend L’Wren Scott commits suicide.”
Now, while I’m not big into fashion (other than making sure my clothes match and my accessories, well…accessorize my outfit), it’s a tragedy that Ms. Scott was in such a dark place that she felt suicide was her only option. More so, it speaks to our culture that her death was eclipsed by who she was dating. Why not expound on what this woman contributed to the fashion world and what impact and influence she had on the people she interacted with during the course of her career? In my brief research on Ms. Scott, I came away with a sense of how successful and accomplished she was in the fashion industry. She was the founder of LS Fashion Ltd. and clothed a number of celebrities in addition to launching a line featured in the Banana Republic stores. She was adopted by Mormon parents and began her modeling career right after high school.
All of these things make me want to know more about Ms. Scott, like what was it like growing up with Mormon parents? How did that influence her life? How did she handle being adopted? How did she get involved in fashion and did she always have an eye for design? This is the type of insight I’d like to have, who she dated is immaterial to how she lived her life.
