Recently, a girlfriend and I decided we were overdue for a girls night out (aka: grown and sexy night out) and met for happy hour at a local restaurant. What ensued once I arrived was nothing short of hilarity in its finest form. I got dressed in what I thought was an appropriate grown, classy AND sexy (I happen to think the two aren’t mutually exclusive) outfit and was on my way. I happened to arrive first and managed to stalk the bar area and grab a table from a couple that were leaving. My girlfriend got there shortly afterwards and we sat chatting about our day while we perused the menu selections. While looking over the menu, I noticed that I had to hold it quite a bit aways to actually see each item…nothing about this move said ‘sexy’. My girlfriend looks over at me and laughs and asks me why I didn’t have my reading glasses on.
Now, I should tell you that I just got these reading glasses a couple of months ago and while they are cute, they’re still reading glasses. I’m 42 and am struggling with the idea that I’m 42 and require reading glasses! Isn’t it enough that my knees make noise when I’m going up stairs and I now have a handful of grey hair at the front of my head (and why is grey hair so bold as to grow in the front of your head?)?! So while this internal struggle is going on, the waiter comes by to go over the specials…and we couldn’t hear anything he said! We had to ask him to repeat himself a couple of times (did I mention the music was loud?). Needless to say we were getting farther away from sexy and closer to “way to grown”. By the time the waiter came around to check on us, we’d given up on even trying to understand what he was saying and just nodded to keep him moving on. By ten o’clock, we were appropriately tired enough that we were looking forward to going home and calling it a night.
To recap, no reading glasses, possibly in need of hearing assistance, and a drink in a half and we’re ready to turn in for the evening. Needless to say, neither of us left feeling grown and sexy that night.
